Hormonal Coordination Flashcards
Endocrine System
made up of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
Insulin
controls your blood glucose
Adrenaline
prepares your body for fight or flight
Pituitary gland secretes:
. ADH
. FSH ( follicle stimulating hormone )
. TSH
Pituitary gland
. Controls growth in children
. Stimulates the thyroid gland to make thyroxine to control the rate if metabolism
. In women - stimulates the ovaries to produce and release eggs and make the female sex hormone oestrogen
. In men - stimulates the testes to make sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone
Thyroid gland
Controls the metabolic rate of the body
Pancreas gland
Controls the levels of glucose in the blood
Adrenal gland
Prepares the body for stressful situations
Ovaries
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics
Testes
Controls the development of the male secondary sexual characteristics
Blood glucose too high:
. pancreas produces insulin
. glucose taken in by cells
. glucose converted to glycogen in liver
Blood glucose too low:
. pancreas produces glucagon
. glycogen broken down to glucose
. amino acids/fats broken down
Type 1 Diabetes
If your pancreas doesn’t make enough ( or any ) insulin, your blood glucose concentration is not controlled
Type 2 Diabetes
The pancreas still makes insulin, although it makes less than your body needs.
Obesity, lack of exercise
Treating Type 1 Diabetes
. replacement insulin before meals
. careful about the levels of carbohydrates you eat
. Insulin injections
Curing Type 1 Diabetes
. Doctors can transplant a pancreas successfully
. Transplanting the pancreatic cells that make insulin from both living and dead donors have been tried, with limited success
Treating Type 2 Diabetes
. eating a balanced diet with carefully controlled amounts of carbohydrates
. losing weight
. doing regular exercise
. drugs to help insulin work better
Adrenaline causes:
. your heart rate and breathing rate to increase
. stored glycogen in the liver to be converted into glucose for respiration
. the pupils of your eyes to dilate and let in more light
. your mental awareness to increase
Puberty in females
. 8 - 14 years old
. growth spurt
. growth of underarm hair and pubic hair
. breasts develop
. skin darkens
. fat is deposited on the hips, buttocks and thighs
. uterus grows and menstruation begins
Puberty in males
. 9 - 15 years old
. growth spurt
. pubic hair
. underarm hair and facial hair growth
. larynx gets bigger and voice breaks
. skin darkens
. testes grow and become active
. shoulder and chest broaden as muscle develops
FSH
cause the eggs in the ovary to mature
LH
stimulates the release of the egg at ovulation
oestrogen
stimulate the build up and maintenance of the uterus lining
progesterone
stimulate the build up and maintenance of the uterus lining/
Hormone-based contraception
. Contraceptive pill
. Implant
. Contraceptive patch
Chemical methods
Spermicide
Barrier methods
. Condom
. Cap
