Hormonal Controls of Pregnancy, Pseudopregnancy Flashcards
Where is progesterone secreted from?
The corpus luteum
Progesterone does what?
Maintains pregnancy. Inhibits the release of GnRH. Stimulates glandular portion of mammary glands. Thickens the endometrium. Closes the cervix.
Define: immunosuppressive
suppresses dam/queen response to foreign invaders
What does relaxin help with?
softening and widening the cervix
Relaxin is present from _______ days after ovulation. Peak levels at _______ days.
25, 50.
Prolactin does what?
Initiates & maintains lactation
Prolactin can be associated with what?
pseudo-pregnancies
What is the purpose of oxytocin?
this stimulates myometrial (uterine) contractions during parturition. it ensures flow of milk that is already in the mammary glands.
Involved in bonding emotions and behaviour.
Where is oxytocin released from?
the posterior pituitary gland.
Define: covert pseudocyesis
where there are elevated progesterone levels and physical changes during met oestrus.
What are some signs of clinical pseudocyesis?
anorexia, nervousness, aggression, nest making, nursing random objects, lactation, and occasional parturition.
Suggest some treatments for pseudocyesis.
(if mild, then generally doesn’t need treating).
often treated with prolactin inhibitors such as bromocriptine (parlodel) or cabergoline (galastop).
often neutered once lactation stopped.
