Chemical messengers
What do hormones do?
They are made in glands and sent around the body in the blood. The blood carries the hormone to the target organ and has an effect
What system are hormones a part of?
The Endocrine system
What are the two types of lands
Exocrine and endocrine
What are the two types of gonad and what do they produce?
- Ovaries = Produce oestrogen and progestron
- Testes = Produce testosterone
What do hormones control?
- When an adolsence starts puberty
- How we handle stress, emergencies, weight and emotions/moods
What is the pancreas involved in controlling?
The concentration of glucose in the blood
What are the hormones that the ovaries and testes release, involved in?
Puberty and reproduction
What is thyroxine (thyroid gland) involved in?
Growth and regulating the body’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) - how rapidly the body’s reactions take place
Where is the pituitary gland the ‘master gland’ located
Brain
Why is the pituitary gland extremely important?
Releases a number of different hormones into the blood, depending on its condition
What is the effect of the pituitary gland acting on other glands
The pituitary hormones can trigger a range of different effects on the body
