Horizontal landforms Flashcards
Hilly landscape
Layers of horizontal sedimentary rock which are uniformly resistant to erosion
What kind of characteristics does a Hilly landscape have in Humid climates
- rounded hills
- sheet wash
Sheet wash
Rainfall runs down the slope
What kind of characteristics does a Hilly landscape have in Arid climate
- Hill with narrow gullies
- sharp ridges
- steep slopes
- Band lands
Bad lands
Slopes that are steep and uneven
How is Basaltic plateaus formed
- Lava flows to the earths surfaces
- Forming thick basaltic rocks
- Which are horizontal and uniformly resistant to erosion
- Creating a basaltic plateau
Examples of basaltic plateaus in SA
Drakensberg
And Deccan plateau in India
Scarp retreat
When scarp slopes get eroded they only loses ground but not height
Cap rock
The rock on top of the Karoo that is resistant to resistant, making the hills height stay uniform
Pediplain
Is formed when the river has eroded all the hills, therefore a large flat area
Chemical weathering
Water causes rocks to decompose
What kind of slopes are suitable for farming and human settlements
Hilly landscapes in Humid temperature
Why is Hilly landscapes good for farming
- because of chemical weathering, the soil is fine and thick
- suitable to grow crops
Why aid the Drakensberg not suitable for farming
It is cold
Because the hills go too high up.
Can a Basaltic pleateu be suitable for farming and human settlement and why
Yes, because water weathering can create appropriate soil to grow crops for example in the Deccan pleteau in India.
