What did he attempt to do?
• Attempted to remove all evidence of their reigns form Egyptian history and began destroying everything associated with Aten cult
What actions did he take?
- Began obliteration of Aten religion after wife’s death in 15th/16th year of his reign.
- Replaced Tut’s and Ay’s name on all recent monuments to his.
- Began destroying buildings/sites dedicated to Aten .e.g sun temples at Karnak, Memphis and Heliopolis dismantled
- Razed Akhetaten to the ground – site became a quarry for later kings. Used stone blocks (talatat) as fill and foundation for his own building projects.
- Every stela and piece of statuary smashed and royal tomb was desecrated.
What is known for doing at temple at Karnak?
• additions to Temple at Karnak – mammoth hypostyle hall, 9th and 10th pylons.
What did he inadvertently do for Akhenaten?
Horemheb inadvertently preserved Akhenaten’s building/art in his own buildings (inscriptions and reliefs on stones)
What did he do to the temples/ to support his legacy and status?
- Luxor temple – continued work of Amenhotep III
* Also continued work of Tut, although claimed as his own.
What is credited for associated with Amun?
Focus on Amun temples, credited with restoring Amun temples and priesthoods. However, appointed trusted men as priests, due to problems (corruption due to wealth) caused by previous priests. Also replaced judges, officials etc
Effectiveness of his reign?
- Restored name of Amun
- In king’s list of the Ramesside period, he was recorded as successor of Amenhotep III. Number of years from reign of Akhenaten to Ay were added to his reign, so that in king list he was accredited with rein of 59 years.
