Homologous Series Flashcards
1
Q
what is a homologous series
A
a homologous series is a family of compounds with the same general formula and similar chemical properties
2
Q
Shortened formula
e.g butane
A
CH3CH2CH2CH3
3
Q
saturated compounds
A
saturated compounds only contain c-c single bonds
and if added to bromine water it will remain yellow
4
Q
unsaturated compounds
A
unsaturated compounds contain at least one c=c double bond
and if added to bromine water it will decolourise
5
Q
isomers
A
isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas
6
Q
Alkanes
A
- homologous series of hydrocarbons
- all end in the same suffix -ane
- saturated hydrocarbons, onlu contain single c-c bonds
- no reaction with bromine water
7
Q
Alkenes
A
- homologous series of hydrocarbons
- all end in the same suffix -ene
- unsaturated hydrocarbons. only contain c=c double bonds
- rapidly decolourise bromine water
8
Q
Alkanes general formula
A
C(n) H(2n+2)
9
Q
Alkene general formula
A
C(n) H(2n)
10
Q
Cycloalkanes
A
- all end in the same suffix -ane
- start with the prefix cyclo-
3, saturated hydrocarbons , onlu contain c-c single bonds - no reaction with bromine water
11
Q
cycloalkanes general formula
A
C(n) H(2n)
