Homework 3- Flashcards
What is a isotope
a different possibel evrsion of the same atom
what do you call atoms found in nature?
in nature it is either sustainable or sustainable. Most of the atoms around you contain a stable nucleus.
what are radio isotopes
these are atoms with the unstable nucleus
what can radio isotopes do?
eject particles or electromagnetic waves from the nucleus at any moment and undergo nucleus decay
what does it mean if the atom is stable?
atom=stable when forces around the particle that makes up the nucleus are balanced
What does it mean in the atom is unstable?
unstable=these forces are unbalanced; if the nucleus has access of internal energy
Then what does it result to when the atom is unstable?
instability of an atoms nucleus may result from access of either neutrons of protons
how is it hen a radioactive atom?
radioactive atom=attept to reach stabliity by throwing off nucleons9protons and neutrons0as well as other particles ,or by releasing energy in other forms.
how is it then a radioactive atom?
radioactive atom=attempt to reach stability by throwing off nucleons9protons and neutrons0as well as other particles ,or by releasing energy in other forms.
what are the 3 types of radiation?
alpha,beta,gamma
what is alpha decay?
a nucleus ejects an alpha particles which is a cluster of 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
what particle is it identical too?
identical to the helium-4-ucleus ans can be referred to 4/2 he2+
What is beta decay?
beta decays normally occurs in the nuclei that has too may neutrons to sustain(achieve stability)
more info on beta decay….
the nucleus eject the beta particles in which are identical to electrons ans therefore are very small and negatively charged.
uses of beta decay
range of penetrating powers such as thickness detectors, treatment of eye and bone cancer.
