Bridge
A type of social tie that connects two different groups in a social network
Universalistic standards
Everyone is judged by the same standards regardless of family ties, class, race, ethnicity, gender or sexuality
Particularistic Standards
Children are not judged by standards that can be applied to everyone in society
Norms
Rules or expectations that are socially enforced
Values
A cultures standard for discerning what is good and just in society
Ascribed Status
The social status of a person that is assigned at birth or assumed involuntarily later in life
Achieved status
A social position that a person can acquire in the basis of merit and is earned or chosen
Socialisation function
The process through which individuals learn the norms and values of society, leading to social cohesion and a functional society
Meritocracy
A social system in which advancement in society is based on an individual’s capabilities rather than on the basis of family, wealth or social
Economic function
Protection of private property and maintaining law and order, raising taxes and providing public services
