Homework 10 Flashcards
Scrooge… wept to see his poor forgotten self as he used to be.
This quote highlights how Scrooge was nelected and left alone as a child. This then makes the ready have a sense of sorrow and sympathy for Scrooge.
I wish, … but it’s too late now.
This shows that Scrooge knows that it’s already too late now to undo his actions of the past but doesn’t think about how he could change right now in the present.
Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!
This shows the desperatio of Scrooge wanting the phantom to help him.
two children; wretched, abject, frightful, hideous, miserable…a boy and girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish… a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds…monsters
Scrooge has used a list of negative verbs to show how bad the boy and girl are and look but also how there’s a deep meaning behind this..
This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.
Dickens writes this in the Script and highlight ‘Doom’ because that could be Scrooge’s fate.
a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him.
The verbs highlight that the Phatom looks like The Grim Reaper and is mysterious but terrifying at the same time.
Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me, by an altered life!
This quote shows that Scrooge is desperate for assurance that he is on the right path of change.
Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!
Scrooge really really wants to be told that he can remove this and not let it happen.
