Homeostatis/digestive system Flashcards
Organ systems
Cells are the smallest units of life
4 primary tissues-epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous
Homeostasis
The maintenance of internal body conditions to normal levels
Regulated by- the nervous system and endocrine system
Systems
Nervous-
Central nervous system- brain/spinal cord
Peripheral nerves- other nerves in the body that control system
Sensory neurons- nerve cell that carrie’s impulse from receptor to brain
Motor neurons- carrie’s impulses from brain to muscles
Somatic nerves- voluntary
Autonomic nerves- involuntary
Sympathetic- responds to stressful situations
Parasympathetic- responds to relaxation after situation
Endocrine system
Glands- make hormones respond to signals
Hormones- chemical made in glands, travel via blood, affect target cells
Carbohydrates
Made of C,H,O
Soluble in water
Source of energy (55%), short term and long term
Monosaccharide- simple sugars, 3-7 carbons and ends in ose
Disaccharide- 2 bonded together
Polysaccharide- many joined together, polymers- hundreds + glucose subunits and starch- in plants
Cellulose- in plant cell walls
Glycogen- made and stored in animals
Lipids
Energy source- 30% of diet, long term (2.25 times more than carbs) and cushioning of internal organs/vitamin absorption
Made of C,H,O
Not soluble in water
Fats and oils
Saturated- solid at room temp and straight
Unsaturated- liquid and double bonds
