Homeostatis Flashcards
What is homeostasis
The fancy word for keeping the conditions in your body and cells at the right level. This happens in response to changes inside and outside of the body
Why is homeostasis important
Your cells need the right conditions to work properly e.g. enzymes
What are examples of control systems
-body temperature
-blood glucose level
-water level
(They are automatic)
Control systems are made up of 3 main parts
- receptors
- coordination centres
- effectors
The nervous system is made up of different parts:
- CNS
- receptors
- sensory neurons
- Motor neurons
- effectors
What makes up the central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord
What is a synapse
It is where two neurones join together
What is a reflex and what does it do
Reflexes are automatic responses.
They can help stop you getting injured
Some Really Scary Cops Make Everyone Run
Stimulus Receptor Sensory neurone CNS Motor neurone Effector Response
What is reaction time
Reaction time is the time it takes to respond to a stimulus
What is the pituitary gland also referred to as
The master gland
What does thyroid produce
Thyroxine
What does the ovaries produce
Oestrogen
What does the adrenal gland produce
Adrenaline
What does the testes produce
Testosterone
