Homeostatis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The process of maintaining a constant internal environment within narrow limits, despite changes that take place in the external environment
Negative feedback
A change from the set-point of any factor is corrected by bringing about a change in the opposite direction
Receptor
Detects a change from the set point and sends information to the control centre
Control centre
Processes the information and activated corrective mechanisms
Effector
Responds to and corrects the change, returning conditions to set point
Thermoregulation
Maintenance of a constant internal body temperature by balancing production and heat loss
Radiation
Loss of heat energy from a warm body to a cooler environment
Conduction
Loss of heat energy from hot to cold objects by physical contact
Convection
Heat moves from hot object, rises and is replaced by cold air
Evaporation
Loss of heat by using body heat to change sweat into water vapour
Vasoconstriction
The construction of circular muscles in the dermal arterioles which limits the flow of blood to the capillary loops
Vasodilation
The widening of blood vessels as a result of the relaxation of the blood vessels muscular walls
