homeostasis & metabolism Flashcards
How do cells maintain homeostasis?
All organisms must constantly convert chemicals from one form to another
What does homeostasis help produce & obtain?
Produce necessary molecules
Obtain usable molecules from food
Produce energy-rich molecules
Define metabolism
All the chemical reactions occurring constantly in the cell that maintain homeostasis
Is the orderly step-wise series of chemical reactions from the initial reactants to the final product
Is one reaction leading to the next, highly structured, controlled by enzymes
Metabolic pathways
Not possible in bio systems to have a single reaction which produces complex molecules from simple reactants
Many intermediate steps are needed where one pathway can lead to several others
Intermediate products of one pathway can be a starting reactant for another pathway
