Homeostasis & Feedback Flashcards
Homeostasis
The body’s ability to detect change, activate mechanisms to maintain relatively stable internal conditions
What systems maintain homeostasis
Nervous system (electrical) & endocrine system (chemical)
Elements of a feedback loop
Stimulus, receptor, input, control centre, output, effector
Input
Info going toward the control centre
Output
Info leaving control centre going toward effector
Control Centre
Integrates information to determine response
Receptor
Detects change
Effector
Responds to reduce effect of stimulus
Stimulus
Produces change in variable
Negative feedback loop
A change is sensed & mechanisms to reverse the change are activated
Positive feedback loop
Change leads to greater change in the same direction
Homeostatic Imbalance can cause
Diseases
Homeostatic imbalances can be caused by
Aging. Genetic mutations. Pathogens. Environmental factors
