homeostasis and the metric system Flashcards
homeostasis
maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment in spite of challenges in the external environment.
home = same
stasis = stillness/inactivity/keeping things balanced
example of homeostasis
water regulation, temperature regulation, blood sugar regulation
negative feedback system
when something is too much or too little. the body wants to bring it back to normal. ( bring it back to the set point)
setting a thermostat at a certain temperature is called what?
homeostasis
positive feedback system
instead of bringing everything back to a certain set point, you’re just trying to exaggerate a response until you get to the point where the “spark” isn’t there anymore.
example of negative feedback
body, temperature, blood glucose level, pH, blood pressure
example of positive feedback
delivery of baby, lactation, ovulation
