Homeostasis And The Kidney Flashcards
What is excretion?
Removal of waste products from biochemical pathways
What is the order of negative feedback?
Stimulus -> Sensor -> Control -> Effector
Where do positive feedback loops take place in humans?
Childbirth, blood clots, heat stroke
What type of feedback responds to environmental factors?
Negative feedback loops
What systems control homeostasis?
Nervous and Endocrine
What substances are excreted?
CO2, Urea, Creatine, Uric acid, Bile pigments, Water
What is homeostasis?
How the body maintains a constant internal environment
Why is it important to maintain constant internal environment?
So that rate of reaction, solute concentration, etc stay the same
Describe the excretion of nitrogenous waste
Amine group from amino acids converted into ammonia. This then forms urea in the liver.
Describe the excretory system
Kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra
What is the kidney capsule?
Tough outer layer of the kidney
What is the kidney cortex?
Contains the Bowman’s Capsules and Convoluted Tubules
What is in the medulla?
Loops of Henle and collecting ducts
What is osmoregulation?
Control of water content and solute composition of bodily fluids
Describe ultrafiltration
Blood comes through Afferent arteriole into Glomerulus (in Bowman’s Capsule), leaves through efferent arteriole at higher pressure
