Homeostasis and response Flashcards
coordination centres
Areas that receive information from receptors
Effectors
Areas that bring about a response (normally a muscle)
Homeostasis
the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions . This happens in response to internal and external changes (stimulus).
Pituitary Gland
The master gland. Releases lots of different hormones including LH and FSH which regulates menstruation.
Reflex
A response to a stimulus which happens quickly to protect from harm. These nervous pathways do not involve the brain.
Receptors
Detect changes in the environment (eyes, ears, skin etc…)
Stimulus
A change in the internal or external environment.
Ovulation
The release of an egg from the ovaries
Endocrine system
The system that contains the glands and hormones within the body.
Hormones
Chemical messengers in the body that travel in the blood (slow action)
Glands
Secrete hormones into the blood
Nerve cells/ neurons
Send electrical signals around the body.
Pancreas
Gland which secretes insulin and regulates blood glucose levels.
Insulin
Hormone which causes uptake of glucose from the blood stream into liver cells. Glucose is stored as glycogen.
Glycogen
Store of glucose
