Homeostasis Flashcards
What is protease?
The enzyme which breaks down protein into amino acids
Why is the liver crucial in homeostasis?
The liver maintains excess amino acids, creating urea
What is released from the liver?
The liver releases urea and water to the bloodstream , then to the kidneys
Why are the kidneys essential in homeostasis?
They remove excess water, salt and urea. The blood transported to the kidneys is at high pressure, meaning useful molecules are reabsorbed
What are nephrons?
Small filtering units within the kidneys
Describe the three stages of filtration
1) Blood enters the nephrons in the kidneys, this consists of a tubule which cleans the blood by removing excess water and urea
2) The kidneys reabsorb useful molecules and send them back into the blood stream in veins
3) the left over molecules pass along the tubule as urine
