Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
the property of a system to maintain a constant and stable internal environment against disturbances from the outside.
2 things that are changing in the body from drinking wate
- Amount of water in blood increased
- Body temperature decreased
Hyperthermia
Body is overheating , dangerously increasing temp in the body
Hypothermia
Body temperature has significantly decreased which becomes dangerous
Hypothalamus
An area of the brain that produces hormones that control body temperature, heart rate and hunger.
It also compares the measured temperature to the set point. When the temperature is too high or low it sends to various effectors
Insulin
Naturally occurring hormone the pancreas makes essential for allowing the body to use sugar for energy
Receptor
The part of the system that detects the stimulus
Effectors
Small molecule that selectively binds to a protein to regulate its biological activity.
ADH
A chemical produced in the brain which results in the kidney releasing less water = decreasing the amount of urine produced
Glucagon
A hormone in the pancreas that helps manage your blood glucose (sugar) levels.
Glucose
Main sugar found in your blood
Enzyme
A biological catalyst that helps speed up a chemical reaction
Thermoregulation
How the body keeps a constant internal temperature.
