Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis and what conditions are maintained by it
Maintenance of an organisms internal environment
Body temp
Glucose concentration
Salt concentration
Blood Pressure
Carbon dioxide concentration
Standard Response Pathway
Stimulus-Receptor Communication pathway-effector-response
What are sensory receptors
Monitor changes in the external and internal environments
Example: temp receptors in skin
Effector Cells
Bring about a response
Example: Muscle cell contracting or gland producing hormone
Negative Feedback
Receptors detect when a level is too high or too low and level is brought back to the optimum
Example: Body temperature
Positive Feedback
Some changes trigger a positive feedback mechanism which amplifies the change
Example: Childbirth where oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions that get larger as pregnancy goes on
