Define homeostasis
It is the process of maintaining constant internal body conditions
Why is homeostasis important?
It ensures the maintenance of optimal conditions for enzyme action and cell function
How is urea produced?
Urea is produced in the liver from the deamination of excess amino acids
Functions of kidneys
They regulate the water content of the blood and they excrete toxic waste products of metabolism
What is the kidney surrounded by?
A tough outer layer known as the fibrous capsule
Renal artery
Carries oxygenated blood to kidneys
Renal vein
Carries deoxygenated blood away from kidneys
Ureter
Carries urine from kidneys to bladder
Bladder
Stores urine
Urethra
Releases urine outside the body
What two stages do the formation of urine occur in?
1) Ultrafiltration
2) Selective reabsorption
