Homeostasis Flashcards
1st step in homeostasis
Stimulus: the change in the variable occurs (e.g. temperature, stretch in muscle)
2nd step
Receptor: structure that detects the stimulus (e.g. sensory neurons, stretch receptors)
3rd step
Receptor sends input info to the control center
4th step
Control Center: Structure integrates input and initiates change though effectors
5th step
Control Center sends output info to effectors
6th step
Effector: Structure that brings about a change carries through orders
7th step
Homeostasis restored
Who are the receptors equivalent to in an office?
Worker who detects the problem and reports it to the boss
Who is the control center?
Boss who receives info from receptor and tells the effectors what to do to combat the problem
Who are the effectors?
Workers who receive boss’s plan and implement the plan to regulate
What are the 2 categories of the homeostatic system?
Negative feedback loop and positive feedback loop
Negative feedback loop:
moves stimulus in OPPOSITE direction; negates the problem (e.g. a hot body will try to decrease its temperature)
Positive feedback loop:
moves stimulus in the SAME direction (e.g. childbirth)
Homeostasis:
normal, balanced state in which a body can function in. Regulation
