What does the term prioritization mean in the context of homeostasis?

A

when our bodies are thrown off balance, they tend to compensate by prioritizing getting back towards balance
while this is happening other things may be sacrificed

What is the sensor or “thermostat” mechanism that the body uses to detect acute changes in blood pressure?

A

baroreceptor - monitors blood pressure
located in carotid artery
baroreceptors activate the sympathetic nervous system in response to low Bp and activate the parasympathetic nervous system in response to high Bp

How would you describe the sequence of physiological events that occur in response to a significant acute hemorrhage (loss of blood)?

A

loss of blood decreases blood pressure

when baroreceptors are activated, sympathetic nervous system turns on things like epinephrine, norepinephrine all increasing BP
heart pumps, blood vessels constrict

What is the relationship between the mechanisms involved in restoration of blood pressure after acute blood loss and the Ohm’s Law analogy that you learned about in previous lessons?

A

OHMs law:
MAP - CVP = Q x SVR

MAP falling bc of bleeding
response of body is to increase Q (heart contracting- which increases cardiac output) and increase SVR by constricting blood vessels

all to restore MAP

A

chemoreceptors - we have them in brain (central) and carotid arteries (peripheral)

monitors ph and Co2 level in central
and O2 and co2/ph in peripheral
senses H+

  • used in monitoring acid- base balance in body
