Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The condition of equilibrium (balance) in the body’s internal environment maintained by the body’s own regulatory processes
What physiological variables must be kept within narrow parameters (homeostatic balance) in the body?
- Core body temp
- Water & electrolyte concentration
- pH of body fluids
- Bloody glucose levels
- Blood & tissue o2/co2 levels
- Blood pressure
- Flow of life force
Homeostatic control systems are made up of:
- Disruptors - changes
- Detectors
- Control centre - determines limits
- Effectors - receives output
What is a Feedback system
A group of receptors & effectors communicating with their control centre
Negative feedback term
Where the output reverses the input
Effector responses decreases the effect of the stimulus, works like a central heating system
Positive feedback term
Strengthens/reniforces change in one of the body’s controlled conditions
Stimulus progressively increases the response as long as the stimulus continues
Examples of negative feedback systems
Body temp
Blood glucose levels
Blood pressure
Egs of positive feedback systems
Child birth Milk production Enzyme reactions Immunity Blood clotting
What is the lymphatic system
The interconnected system of spaces & vessels between body tissues & organs by which lymph circulates throughout the body
