Homeostasis Flashcards
how does the kidney maintain balance in the body
by homeostasis
where does the kidney regulate water
regulates the amount of water in the plasma
what does the kidney maintain
amount of water
blood pressure an electrolyte balance using the angiotensin-aldosterone mechanism
pH of the plasma
what does pH stand for and what does a high and low pH mean
stands for potential hydrogen
low pH mean acidic
high pH means alkaline
why does the blood pH have to be around 7
if its not around 7 the proteins get denatured
what happens if the tissue fluid is too acidic
hydrogen ions are absorbed into the tubular fluid and bicarbonate ions are excreted.
what happens if the tissue fluid is too alkaline
hydrogen ions are excreted and bicarbonate ions are absorbed.
how does the kidney regulate water balance
The blood is filtered at a high pressure and the kidney selectively reabsorbs any useful materials such as glucose, salt ions and water.
After it has been purified, the blood returns to the circulatory system through the renal vein.
The kidneys produce urine and this helps maintain water balance.
how does the kidney regulate electrolyte balance
by continually filtering the blood.
This is vital to maintain a constant extracellular fluid volume and composition.
