Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of the internal body environment
What is thermoregulation?
The regulation of the internal body temperature
What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is the secretion of hormones from endocrine glands to carry out tasks to achieve homeostasis.
What is glucose stored as in animals and where?
Glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver
What is the function of adrenalin?
Adrenalin is used in situations of extreme stress and is released by the adrenal gland after receiving nerve signals
What is the function of glucagon?
When the pancreas senses low glucose levels it secretes glucagon which goes to the liver and then glycogen is broken down back into glucose and released
What is vasodilation?
Vasodilation is when muscles in the capillaries relax allowing more blood to flow closer to the skin causing hear energy to be radiated from the blood close to the skin.
What is vasoconstriction?
Vasoconstriction is when muscles in the capilaries contract to stop blood flowing close to the skin so heat does not radiate. this is why we turn pale when we are cold
What is the purpose of shivering?
When shivering muscles contract which requires energy gained from repiration and when our muscles contract heat is produced.
What are Goosebumps when we are cold?
When we are cold the erector muscle contracts making the hair straighten giving height. this traps a layer of warm air above the skin stopping radiation.
How does sweating cool us down?
When we get hot muscles near capillaries relax meaning blood can flow near to skin which then causes your sweat glands to secrete sweat. the heat energy from the sweat transfers into kinetic energy meaning the sweat can evaporate.
What is MRS H GREN
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition
What is osmoregulation?
Osmoregulation is the regulation of water in the body.
What is a hormone?
A chemical messenger
Where do hormones travel?
They travel to target organs through the blood stream
