homeostasis 1 Flashcards
definition of homeostasis
prevention of disturbance in a system
Maintaining a constant internal environment which allows all processes to work optimally
equation of life
nutrients +oxygen = co2 + waste +ATP
physiology
the study of how the body maintains a constant internal environment
homeostatic range
the set range within which the body can be subject to change before a pathology develops
how does homeostasis work
1- magnitude of change is detected by receptor which sends an impulse to the integrating centre(e.g. hypothalamus)
2- integrating centre compares the actual value which a reference value
3- if there is a significant difference between the actual value and the reference value then a stimulus is sent to the effector
4- the effector brings about a response which corrects the change
what is the magnitude of the generated signal proportional to?
the magnitude of the response signal
the magnitude of the difference between actual and reference values
Feed-forward system
brings about a response to a change in magnitude in a variable before the change has taken place
positive feedback
a change in magnitude of a variable leads to an even greater disturbance to that variable
