Pros and cons of home birth

A

Pro’s

  • More relaxed in a familiar environment, which can aid progression of labour
  • Greater sense of control
  • Avoid unnecessary intervention
  • Continuity of care (community midwives)

Cons

  • Specialist doctors and equipment won’t be at hand if there is a problem with mother or baby, therefore they may have to be transfered to hospital
  • Limited pain relief available (cannot give epidurals)
    • Entonox (gas and air)
    • Pethidine (opioid injection)

Contraindications for home birth

A
  • First baby
    • Maternal pelvis is untested and experience of childbirth is new
  • Maternal age >35
  • Difficulty conceiving
    • Those who have difficulty conceiving are more likely to have complications during labour
  • Breech
  • Placental abnormalities
  • Prematurity/Postmaturity
  • Multiple birth
  • Maternal health problems
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • Obesity

  • Housing with adequate heating, lighting and hygeine
  • Adequate support (partner, mother etc.)
  • Accessibility
