Pros and cons of home birth
A
Pro’s
- More relaxed in a familiar environment, which can aid progression of labour
- Greater sense of control
- Avoid unnecessary intervention
- Continuity of care (community midwives)
Cons
- Specialist doctors and equipment won’t be at hand if there is a problem with mother or baby, therefore they may have to be transfered to hospital
- Limited pain relief available (cannot give epidurals)
- Entonox (gas and air)
- Pethidine (opioid injection)

Contraindications for home birth
A
- First baby
- Maternal pelvis is untested and experience of childbirth is new
- Maternal age >35
- Difficulty conceiving
- Those who have difficulty conceiving are more likely to have complications during labour
- Breech
- Placental abnormalities
- Prematurity/Postmaturity
- Multiple birth
- Maternal health problems
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Obesity

Social criteria for home birth
A
- Housing with adequate heating, lighting and hygeine
- Adequate support (partner, mother etc.)
- Accessibility
