Abolitionist
(in the past) a person who supported the stopping of slavery.
Segregation
the action or state of setting someone or something apart from others e.g coloured people separated from white people.
Persecution
ill-treatment, especially because of race, politics or religious beliefs
Activist
a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change.
The civil rights movement
a struggle by African Americans in the mid-1950s to late 1960s to achieve Civil Rights equal to those of whites
Jim Crow laws
the laws that enforced racial segregation in the South of America
Civil rights
the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality
Indentured
to officially agree that someone, often a young person, will work for someone else
Uprising
an act of resistance or rebellion; a revolt against those in power

Secede
To withdraw from an organisation (The South threatened to secede from the USA)
Underground railway
A network of people, secret trails and safe houses used to help escaped slaves reach freedom in Canada or in the free north states of America
Confederacy
The group of southern states of America who joined together to split off from the rest of America. Also known as Confederate States of America.
Emancipation
the freeing of someone from slavery.
Assassinated
to murder an important person, especially for political reasons or in exchange for money
