Holderness Coast Flashcards
how quickly does it erode
its the fastest eroding coast in the uk with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rock being eroded in a single storm
why does it erode so easily
geology
power of waves
materials in the sea
geology
mainly boulder clay and glacial sand making up the coast
power of the waves
hydraulic action, attrition and abrasion occur due to the long fetch that waves have when they reach the coast
materials in the sea
materials that are eroded either dissolve or are carried away by LSD, protecting the coast
what did Mike Needly own
Ringborough Farm
facts about Ringborough Farm
bought the farm in 1939 with 145 acres of land with an annual loss of 1-2 metres
1973 he had to remove his piggery
lost nearly half of his land now
sells bottled natural gas in order to survive now
issues with defending the coast
can exacerbate issues further down the coast and harm Spurn Point
not always feasible to build and maintain the defences
no compensation for the loss of land but it costs the owner £5000 - £5500 a year per acre
where have defences been built
withernsea, hornsea, easington, mappleton and bridlington due to a positive cost benefit analysis
why were defences built in mappleton
to protect the road as it would’ve been more expensive to move it than to install the coastal defences which cost £1.9 million in 1991
some benefits to building sea defences
it means people can now get a mortgage and saved the jobs of 20 people working in the local car garage who relied on that road
