Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory
a framework used to distinguish between different national cultures, the dimensions of culture, impact on etiquette facilitating communication
Six Dimensions:
- Power Distance Index
- Collectivism vs. Individualism
- Uncertainty Avoidance Index
- Femininity vs. Masculinity
- Short-Term vs. Long-Term Orientation
- Restraint vs. Indulgence
Power Distance Index
identifies the degree to which a culture accepts social inequality among its people
large power distance
inequality between superiors and subordinates
Small power distance
equality with prestige and rewards equally shared between superiors and subordinates
Individualism focuses on
value hard work, risk, freedom on focusing on goals
high value
Collectivism focuses on
strong association to groups, maintaining group harmony, collective rather than personal goals
low value
Uncertainty Avoidance Index
Identifies the extent to which a culture avoids uncertainty and ambiguity
High UAI
value security, faith in strong systems of rules and procedures, lower employee turnover, and difficulty implanting change
Low UAI
- open to change and new idea
- open acceptance of the unknown and lax rules and regulations
- comfortable in situations that lacks structure
Masculinity
values assertiveness, courage, strength, and competition
Femininity
values cooperation, nurturing, and quality of life
Long-Term Orientation vs. Short-Term Orientation
indicates a society’s time perspective and an attitude of overcoming obstacles with time.
captures differences between eastern and western cultures
Cultures scoring high in strong long-term orientation value..
respect for tradition, thrift, perseverance, sense of personal shame
prioritize future outcomes will occur in the future
Cultures scoring low characterized by
individual stability and reputation, fulfilling social obligations, and reciprocation of greetings and gifts
greater emphasizing on the present than the future
