Chapter 1
Bilbo Baggins is introduced, and the reader learns about the Hobbits’ way of life. Bilbo meets Gandalf, who invites him on an adventure, but Bilbo initially refuses. Gandalf then invites 13 dwarves to Bilbo’s house, who eventually convince him to go.
Chapter 2
Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, and the dwarves begin their journey, but get caught in a thunderstorm. Bilbo’s attempt at pickpocketing leads to an encounter with trolls, but Gandalf saves the group.
Chapter 4
The party hides from a thunderstorm in a cave, which turns out to be the front porch of a goblin horde. The goblins capture the party’s ponies and the men themselves.

Chapter 5
Bilbo becomes separated from the others under the Misty Mountains and finds a magic ring. He then encounters Gollum, a creature who wants to eat Bilbo. Bilbo and Gollum agree to play a game of riddles, with Gollum promising to show Bilbo the way out if Bilbo wins. Bilbo wins, but Gollum still intends to eat him. Bilbo accidentally puts on the ring, which makes him invisible, and escapes.
Chapter 6
Bilbo surprises Gandalf and the dwarves with his new ring of invisibility. The group encounters Wargs, wolf-like creatures that are allies of the goblins. Gandalf uses pinecones to fight off the Wargs, but the goblins and Wargs set the trees on fire. Eagles swoop down and save the group, taking them to the Great Shelf. The eagles are friends with Gandalf and enemies of the goblins. The eagles bring the group food, but Bilbo is too tired to help prepare it.

Bilbo and the dwarves cross Mirkwood, but get trapped by spiders. Bilbo uses the ring to free himself and the dwarves. They retreat to a clearing used by wood elves, where they discover that Thorin is missing.
Chapter 9
Wood elves capture the dwarves and imprison them. Bilbo uses the ring to follow them unseen. He steals the guard’s keys and releases the dwarves.
Chapter 10
The men of Lake-town can see the ruin Smaug caused, but they hope that the dwarves will return and rebuild Dale. Bilbo swims to the shore and lets the dwarves out of their barrels.
Chapter 11
Bilbo and the dwarves continue their journey to the Lonely Mountain, where they find the secret door to the mountain but can’t remember how to open it. Bilbo notices a thrush knocking a snail with its beak, which reminds him of the message on the map. The group realizes it’s Durin’s Day, the dwarf New Year, and they can open the passageway.
Chapter 12
Bilbo earns the dwarves’ respect by stealing a cup from Smaug’s treasure pile. However, Smaug torches most of the mountain and forces the group inside.
Chapter 13
Bilbo and the dwarves are trapped in the Lonely Mountain after Smaug’s rampage in the previous chapter.
Chapter 14
Smaug flies over Lake-town and sets the roofs on fire. The people of Lake-town try to defend themselves, but the Master, the town’s leader, tries to escape by boat. Bard, the captain of the archers, is able to kill Smaug with an arrow after a thrush tells him of the dragon’s weak spot. The Elvenking and his elves help the townspeople rebuild, and Bard and the Elvenking lead troops to the Lonely Mountain to retrieve the dragon’s treasure.
Chapter 15
the dwarves’ encounter with the armies of elves and men led by Bard. Thorin orders the dwarves to build a barricade to prepare for the elves and men. Roac, the raven, tells Bilbo, Thorin, and the other dwarves that Smaug has died. The armies of elves and men warn Thorin that they will not leave until they receive their share of the treasure.
Chapter 16
Bilbo’s efforts to prevent a major battle by giving the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elvenking. Bilbo reveals himself to Bard and the Elvenking and gives the Arkenstone to use against Thorin. Bard and the Elvenking are impressed. Bard and the Elvenking are amazed that Bilbo would risk the dwarves’ anger to prevent war. Bilbo is asked to stay. Bard and the Elvenking ask Bilbo to stay for his safety, but he decides to return
Chapter 17
Bard and the Elvenking try to negotiate with Thorin to return the Arkenstone, but Thorin plans to double-cross them.

Chapter 18
The group fights the goblins and wargs to keep them away from the Main Gate. Bilbo regains consciousness and sees that the goblins have been defeated.

Bilbo returns home to Bag End, where he finds that his hill has been auctioned off because he was presumed dead. He stops the auction and recovers most of his valuables. Bilbo parties with Gandalf and the elves in Rivendell, collects his troll-treasure, and writes his memoirs.
