HNS - Central nervous system Flashcards
Name the important parts of the brain.
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Medulla oblongata
- Hypothalamus
Explain the Cerebrum and its functions.
Cerebrum :
- Largest part of the brain.
- Two cerebral hemispheres (left and right brain)
- white matter
- functions = voluntary action control, higher mental function control, and reads + interprets sense organ nerve impulses.
Explain the hypothalamus and its functions.
Hypothalamus :
- small part of brain
- functions = regulating blood pressure, body temp, heart beat, water balance, hunger appetite, thirst, and sleep.
Next to the ear // almost inside I think
Explain the cerebellum and its functions.
Cerebellum :
- towards bottom of brain near spinal chord
- white matter
- Also two hemispheres connected by worm like nerve tissue mass (vermis)
- functions = controls voluntary actions, controls muscle tone.
- shallow and parallel grooves
Explain the medulla oblongata and its functions.
Medulla oblongata :
- extension of the spinal chord.
- grey matter - inside, white matter - outside.
- functions = transmits nerve impulses from the spinal chord to the brain and back, controls autonomic functions.
What does autonomic mean?
Automatic, the involuntary impulses.
What are the two main parts of the CNS?
The brain and the spinal chord.
Important labels to know in the spinal chord.
Central Canal, grey matter, white matter, dorsal root, spinal nerves.
What are the functions of the spinal chord?
1- provides a pathway for nerve impulses to and from the brain.
2- contains reflex centers that initiate reflex actions.
