HLTH 205 exam Flashcards
What is research?
o Organized study or gathering of information about a specific topic
o Systematic investigation of a topic that produces new knowledge or use existing knowledge in new and innovative ways
What does Scientific method mean?
a systematic body of procedures and techniques applied to carry out an investigation or experimentation targeted at obtaining new knowledge
Why is research important?
o We can see disease trends, risk factors and behaviours
o We can see the outcomes of treatment or public health interventions
o We can see patterns of health care, and health care costs and use
o Used for social- environment causes and patterns of health
What are the different types of health research?
BCGPS:
Behavioural, Clinical, Genetic, Public Health, System and Policies
What does behavioural health research study?
How people and groups act in different ways (and why)
What does clinical health research study?
testing new medicines and devices (e.g., clinical trials, medical treatments)
What does genetic health research study?
examines the role of genes and different health disease and health conditions
What does Public Health research study?
focuses on prevention and treatment of illness in communities/ populations. ((SDoH (Social Determinants of health), prevention policies). Also explore disease trends of population (epidemiology).
What does systems and policies health research study ?
exploring patient feedback and experiences
What is the research cycle?
a series of stages that define a process for for researching information and drawing conclusions. Once a research topic and problem have been identified, the research cycle begins.
What are the 7 stages of research?
- Questioning
- planning
- gathering
- sorting
- Synthesizing
- evaluating
- reporting
What are the 8 steps of the research cycle?
- Review literature
- research purpose & question(s)
- hypothesis and propositions
- methodology and methods
- sampling and recruitment
- data collection
- analysis and interpretation
- disseminate findings
Reviewing literature is for…?
helping to define gaps and/ or determine what research has been done already. “Has this question been asked before?”
Research purpose and research question(s) are for…?
most important part of research process because everything else relies on it. It draws on theory, individual beliefs, knowledge, previous research and literature
Hypothesis and propositions are for…?
Primarily useful for quantitative research; however, in qualitative, we can ‘test’ proportions. A suggested link between 2 or more variables.
