HIV Drugs Flashcards
ART - Antiretroviral Therapy
Usually a combo of 2-3 of several drugs
Fusion Inhibitors
Fuzeon
Prevents cellular fusion between HIV & CD4+
Entry Inhibitors/CCR5 Antagonist
Blocks CD4+ coreceptor from docking with HIV virus
Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs)
Acts by blocking the RNA from turning into DNA
Nucleoside Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)
Need to know one drug from this classification
Acts by joining with the DNA the virus has made and creates “bad” DNA that can’t form new viruses
Abacavir (Ziagen)
Integrase Inhibitors
Inhibits the HIV integrase thereby stopping the integrase from putting the viral DNA in the host DNA inside the nucleus
Protease Inhibitors
2 drugs
Inhibits the HIV protease by stopping the long strand of protein from being chemically “cut” by the protease and thereby stopping it from releasing small particles of the virus
Indinavir (Crixivan)
Nelfinavir (Viracept). This one take with food. Diarrhea is common side effect
Combination Drugs
Increases pt adherence due to less meds
Combivir
Immune Stimulating Drugs (one med)
Cytokine (hormone) that regulates activities of WBC. This stimulates the WBC in the immune system:
Interleukin 2
Interferon
Interferes with viral replication of the virus in the host cell, makes infected/tumor cells stand out T-cells and macrophages. Activates the T-cells and macrophages. Also used in cancer pts
Interleukin 2
Cytokine - immune boosting med
Abacavir (Ziagen)
Nucleoside Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NRTI)
Makes “bad” DNA
Indinavir (Crixivan)
Protease Inhibitor
Nelfinavir (Viracept)
Protease Inhibitor
