what does HIV do in your system?
It destroys (CD4 / T-HELPER) white blood cell.
what does HIV do to a weakened immune system?
allows room for opportunistic infections:
-flu
-colds
-pneumonia
-tuberculosis
-diarrhoea
How does one contract HIV?
Through transmission of bodily fluids, semen, vaginal fluids and blood of a HIV positive patient
How can transmission take place?
-unprotected sex
-blood transfusions (from positive patient)
-use of unsterilised medical equipment
-sharing of drug needles (with positive patient)
-from infected mother to baby through birth or breast feeding
AIDS sufferers feel…
weak, tired and lose weight which can result in weight loss and malnutrition
how to support immune system?
-keeping a balanced diet
-eating regularly to maintain healthy body weight
-eat fresh fruit and vegetables rich in: fibre, antioxidants such as: VITAMINS A, C, E & SELENIUM
-eating protein: restores, rebuilds body tissue and strengthens immune system
-eat carbohydrates
what to avoid which can impair immune system or limit absorption of necessary vitamins and minerals:
-avoid alcohol: interferes with absorption
