How did the SA’s power increase?
Their actions gained legal authority and in February 1933, the SA and Stahlhelm were merged, recognised as the auxiliary police. The police were forbidden from interfering with SA activity.
Why did the SA become dangerous to Hitler?
In July 1933, after creating the one party state, Hitler declared the revolution as over. However, Ernst Röhm advocated for a second revolution, intending for the SA to become the centre of a new national militia that would absorb and replace the existing army. With a combined SA and Stahlhelm membership of 4.5 million in January 1934, his forces vastly outnumbered the army. In August 1933, the SA lost its status as auxiliary police and was subjected to stricter regulations over its powers of arrest.
