Who were the Normans?
The Normans were Vikings, or Norsemen, who settled in northern France in the 900s. Their descendants also were called Normans. The Normans were skilled fighters and leaders.
Who were the contenders for the English throne in 1066?
Harold Godwinson - Harold was Edward’s brother-in-law, but there was no blood connection. William - William was a cousin of Edward the Confessor, through Edward’s mother Emma, who was William’s great-aunt. Harald Hardrada - Harald had no direct blood ties to the English royal families.
What were some things that happened in the battle of Stamford Bridge?
Godwinson’s and Hardrada’s armies went to battle at Stamford Bridge just outside York.
A Viking warrior blocked the bridge stopping Harold Godwinson‘s army from crossing. One of Godwinson soldiers flooded under the bridge in a barrel and stabbed the Viking through the slats in the bridge, allowing the rest of the English army to cross the river.
After a violent battle Harold Godwinson was victorious. Both Hardrada and Tostig were killed and the remaining of Hardrada’s armies were allowed to return to Norway.

BUT William of Normandy’s army pretended to retreat Harold and when Harold Godwinson’s soldiers just after them, they turned back and fought until they won the battle and Harold was killed.
Why did William of Normandy win the battle?
Cause one: William used a clever tactic- the fake retreat.
Cause two: The weather delay meant that William faced a weekend English army. (After the battle of Stamford bridge the English army was weakened and had lost soldiers.
Cause three: Norman archer killed Godwin and this was disastrous for the English army.
Cause four: the Norman’s had a cavalry and the English didn’t.
