1931 to 1932
Manchurian crisis - cause
The Kwantung Army attacks the japanese railroad in China as an escuse to invade.
They claimed that they were trying to restore peace and protect themselves from Chinese anarchy
Manchurian crisis - Economic
Following the great depression, the Japanese could not wholly rely on trade
so they were willing to seize Manchuria, which was rich in resources
Manchurian crisis - ease of attack
China was in the middle of a civil war (communists vs nationalists)
The region of Manchuria was not controlled by the national government but an independent warlord
Manchuria bordered the colony of Korea, making it easier for the Japanese to access them.
Manchurian crisis - recent
Japan felt threatened by the rise of nationalist China
Thought that Manchuria could come under the control of centra china if they did not strike now
Manchurian crisis - France, Britain and LoN
LoN only went as far as moral condemnation - the Lytton committee was sent in 1932 to investigate what happened. By that time, Japan had already established a puppet state of Manchukuo.
Big powers which could have contributed to sanctioning japan were absent - US and USSR
French and British were ambivalent
even pleased, since Japan was pivoting away from THEIR own colonies in the South, invading towards their shared enemy of the USSR
allies with Japan
Abyssinian Crisis - date
1935 to 1936
