Carpetbagger
men from the North that came to the South after the Civil War to make money from the people of the South.
Black Codes
Southern laws designed to stop African Americans from getting jobs and to limit their rights
Sharecropping
a freedman would be allowed to live and farm on the land of a plantation owner, but would have to pay for supplies and give a share of his crops to the owner. In the end, they always owed more money than they made
Plessy vs. Ferguson
A Supreme Court Case that determined segregation was legal if “separate but equal” was followed. It allowed Jim Crow laws
KKK
a group that terrorized African Americans to stop them from getting their rights
Jim Crow Laws
Laws that kept blacks and whites separate in public places.
Segregation
keeping blacks and whites separate
Secede
To break away. The South wanted to break from the US during the Civil War.
Union
The states that were part of the United States during the war (Yankees)
Confederacy
The states that did not want to be a part of the United States during the Civil War (rebels)
Freedman
a freed slave
Civil War
A conflict between two groups of people in a country.
Slavery
Forced labor with no pay and no freedom to make your own choices.
Scalawag
A white Southerner who was loyal to the North during Reconstruction. (Southerns thought these people were traitors!)
Civil Rights Act of 1866
A law that said all citizens in the US (including former slaves) should be treated equally.
Sharecroppers
Former slaves who farmed land for a share of the profits. They did not make much money.
Disrimination
Behaving unfairly, toward the members of a group.
Lincoln’s Reconstruction Plan
10 percent of southerns would have to take a loyalty oath
He wanted reconciliation more than punishment for the South
Confederate leaders were not forgiven (given amnesty) under his plan
President Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan
Required passage of the 13th amendment
Gave former leaders of the Confederacy the ability to vote and run for office
