What central issues influenced the arguments for and against the admission of Texas as a state?
One of the main issues surrounding Texas’s annexation is the standpoint it would have on the slave states. Northern states did not want Texas to join bc they did not want another slave state, especially one this big, joining American. The southern states however, were for it as it went to their goals in both expanding slave state power and manifest destiny.
What was the significance of the Alamo to Texas independence and Texas statehood?
It served as a memory that helped drive the Texas citizens to independence. At the Alamo, Texans were slaughtered as well as horribly defeated. By saying “Remember the Alamo” these texans were vowing to not let this happen again. Namely, by getting out of Mexico’s grasp.

Manifest destiny was the belief of the Americans that they should be the only ones to own all of North America. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo took the northern third of Mexico for America, while also allowing the US to keep New Mexico and California. This added 1.2 million square miles to the US. Therefore, it supported the concept of manifest destiny greatly contributing to its overall goal.

A. A transcendentalist is a person who follows the literary and philosophical movement based on finding spiritual reality through nature and truth. He was a leading transcendentalist. B. In 1846, he was jailed after refusing to pay taxes to support the Mexican-American War, which he viewed as immoral. He explained his thinking in a landmark essay, “Civil Disobedience,” in which he argues that a person must be true to his or her own conscience, even if it means breaking the law. “Civil Disobedience” provided inspiration to later leaders who fought for civil rights around the world and is still widely read and admired. C. Moreover, he believed in transcendentalism because it said the answers were in the deepest part of oneself and this goes along with his thinking of one must be true to his or her conscience no matter what.
Second Great Awakening. KNOW A LOT?
Protestant preachers started this. They preached salvation was open to all, not just the elite. (Known as revivalists.) Emphasis on individual responsibility. This was a powerful message for a young country that valued individualism and self reliance. Church membership skyrocketed.
On the Second Great Awakening and Women?
The second great swept the country beginning in the early 1800s and lasted for half the century. Women began to participate in public speaking (worship) which used to be denied by them.
How Denmark and Nate Turner and Besay respond to slavery?
A. Denmark Vesey planned a slave revolt be preparing slaves to seize control of Charleston, South Carolina. The revolt never took place because officials learned of the plot. Vesey was hung along w/ 34 others. B. Nat Turner taught himself to read the Bible and believed that he had received a sign from God to lead his people to freedom. They traveled to Richmond intending to capture an armory and gain weapons. They killed 60 people before they were stopped and later executed.
How William Lloyd Garrison was a different abolitionist than others?
He tried to convince people slavery was wrong using dramatic language. This technique is called moral suasion.

The Gag Rule prohibited debate and discussion in Congress on the subject of slavery.
How did industrialization improve the status of women?
As the Northeast was rapidly industrializing, women had the opportunity to work outside of home. Thousand of women began to work in mills and factories. They gave them a small degree of economic independence and a larger degree of social independence as they developed friendships with other factory workers.
How did Southerners respond to the arguments offered by abolitionist?
They argued that slavery formed the foundation of the South’s agricultural economy. They argued that slavery benefited the North, since the North’s textile and shipping industries depend upon southern cotton.

First Women’s Rights Convention in the nation. Adopted a “Declaration of Sentiments.” Led to few concrete improvements in women’s rights. It marked the beginning of the women’s movement in the US.
