Why are Freedom of Thought and We’re All Equal Before The Law both important human rights?
They are important because
1. we should be able to think whatever we want since no one has control of our minds.
2. if the law had exceptions for certain people with different qualities then that would be inequality.
What does the UDHR stand for?
Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
What does voyage mean?
A long journey by sea.
Who established the RAC?
Charles II and his brother James Duke of York.
Where did the middle passage go from and to?
From West Africa to North America and the Carribbean.
How long could the Middle Passage voyage take?
6-11 weeks.
15% lost their lives on the Middle Passage, why?
Poor conditions, murder or suicide.
What was the most famous mutiny?
In 1839 the Amistad.
What is seasoning?
When the enslaved Africans were forced to change from their African names to Christian names.
Name two sugar islands.
Except any from: The Sugar Islands- Barbados, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis and Antigua.
What were the sugar islands?
British controlled Carribbean colonies which produced high volumes of sugar to transported to Britain.
Give two reasons why sugar became apart of nearly everyone’s diets in Britain.
- Queen Elizabeth ate so much of it that her teeth turned black. This then turned into a trend.
- The sugar was grown on plantations which made it cheaper and became affordable.
What were the punishments of plantations?
Whipping or beating with a stick, sometimes to the breaking of bones.
What is a freedom fighter?
Someone who led a rebellion
What is an abolitionist?
Someone who peacefully protested against enslaving people.

Toussiant L’Ouverture led a group of Africans in 1791 to fight for their freedom from the French rule. Plantation owners were killed and sugar cane was set ablaze.
Talk about two abolitionists.
HANNAH MORE- wrote poems and books about the slave trade and convinced many to ban it.
WILLIAM WELBERFORCE- was a member of parliament. The first time he introduced the idea of stopping slavery he lost the vote by 163 to 88, but never gave up.
What was the Industial Revolution?
A time in British history when we changed from being rural life to an industrial society.
Give one reason for the Industrial Revolution.
Britain was rich in raw materials like iron and steel. By 1850, Britain produced 2/3 of the world’s coal and steel. Canals were dug to link growing cities together and transport goods between them. Roads were improved to make travel by cart easier and faster. Railways were laid.
Define resistance.
Resistance means people working against control or pressure.
Summarise the Zong Massacre.
The Zong Massacre happened in 1781 when the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw over 130 enslaved Africans into the sea. They claimed this was necessary because of a shortage of water, though records later suggested there was enough onboard. The ship’s owners then tried to claim insurance money for the lost “cargo.”
