Saar Plebiscite
Treaty of Versailles had put the Saar under the control of the League on Nations for 15 years but in 1935 the inhabitants of the Saar voted to return to Germany.
Conscription and Re-armament
Hitler began to build up his armed forces. He introduced conscription (calling up me to the army).
Rhineland
7 March 1936, they invaded the Rhineland. It was bluff, they only sent 22,000 soldiers who had orders to return if they met any resistance.
Austria
1938 they took over. First they encouraged Austrian Nazis to demand union with Germany. 11 March 1938 it was invaded. Anschluss (annexation) and Lebensraum (living space).
Munich
1938 they tried to take over the Sudetenland. First they encouraged Sudeten Germans to demand union with Germany. Germany then made plans to invade Czechoslovakia. Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler. In Munich, on 29 September 1938, Britain and France gave Hitler the Sudetenland.
Czechoslovakia
15 March 1939, troops marched into the rest of Czechoslovakia. For many Brits this was the time that they realized the only way to beat Hitler was war.
USSR/ Nazi Pact
Summer 1939, plans unfold to invade Poland. Germans in Danzig demand union with Germany. Hitler threatens war. Chamberlain promises support for the Polish. August 1939, Hitler signs a secret treaty with Stalin, the leader of Russia. Non Aggression Pact.
Poland
April 1939, Chamberlain announced the Polish Guarantee, ending appeasement. 1 September 1939, Germany invades Poland. 3 September 1939, Chamberlain declares war.
