What were the witan?
a group of english advisors who made up the most important noblement in england.
What did Harold Godwinson say Edward told him?
Harold said that Edward had promised him the throne on his deathbed (Novissima Verba).
He also had the support of the witan.
What was William’s claim to the throne?
William claimed that Edward had promised him the throne earlier in his reign.
In 1051, the Godwins rebelled against Edward, and Williman travelled to England to give his support to Edward and as a result Edward promised him the throne.
What does Simony mean?
Some chuchmen bought and sold religious offices and promotions.
Who was Tostig?
Tostig was Harold Godwinson’s brother. Tostig was removed from his position as Earl of Northumbria in 1065 and so he sought revenge on his brother by encouraging Hardrada to invade.
