Who were the contenders for the throne in 1066 and what were the reasons for their claim?
Harald Hardrada, who was related to a previous English king and claimed he should take the throne. Harold Godwinson, who was the Earl of Wessex and a powerful landowner in England. William, Duke of Normandy, who claimed he had been promised the throne by Edward.
What are the events of the battle of Stamford Bridge?🌉
The outcome was a decisive victory for King Harold II. The Norwegians were caught off guard and all those camped at Stamford Bridge were killed. The Norwegian reinforcements were also defeated and only a small force escaped. Both Tostig Godwinson and Harald Hardrada were killed during the battle.
Events of the battle of Hastings.
27 September 1066: William of Normandy sets sail with his fleet.
28 September 1066: the Norman fleet lands at Pevensey.
2 October 1066: Harold sets off from York after Battle of Stamford Bridge.
12 October 1066: Harold leaves London to meet William’s troops.
Reasons why William won the battle of Hastings.
He had high ground up on the hill, he had all his soldiers create a shield wall, he had many archers, his army as better trained and last of all he had a moat to stop others from getting over.

The Harrying of the North refers to the brutal slaughter and pillaging of Northumbria in 1069-1070 by the army of William the Conqueror. This is thought to have been devastating to the extent that 100,000 people starved to death
