History Quiz Study (Semester 2) Flashcards
Relationship between Carthage and Rome (before the Punic Wars)
Carthage and Rome didn’t have a good relationship. Carthage had more power (had more trading routes, a more powerful navy, and more land. LAND = POWER)
1st Punic War
The first Punic war was fought mostly at sea. Carthage had a more powerful navy but the Romans copied their ships. The Romans won in 241BC. The Romans got Sicily.
2nd Punic War
Hannibal and his troops marched through the alps (in Italy) on elephants. Hannibal fought the Romans but could not make it to the capital because he had to go back and defend Carthage. The Romans won lots of money and Spain from their victory.
3rd Punic War
Carthage was sieged and was burned to the ground. Many people of Carthage died but the people who survived were later caught and sold into slavery.
Cost for the Romans to fight the war
Many farmers had to sell their land and import livestock and grain from Sicily because the crops and land had been destroyed by Hannibal’s army. Romans lost so many soldiers and citizens to the war.
