History Of The Atom Flashcards
Who made the first model of the atom and what was it?
John dalton- solid sphere
Who made the second model of the atom and what was it?
Thomson - plum pudding model
What was the plum pudding model?
Atom as a ball of positive charge with electrons stuck in it.(Thomson discovered electrons )
Who made the third model of the atom and what was it?
Rutherford- nuclear model
What is the nuclear model?
Discovered due to the alpha particle scattering experiments, the nuclear model has a tiny positively charged nucleus in the centre where most of the mass is concentrated. A cloud g negative electrons surrounds the nucleus. (Protons discovered by Rutherford)
Who created the 4th model of the atom and what was it?
Bohr-nuclear model
What is the nuclear model?
Bohr’s nuclear model of the atom suggests that electrons orbited the nucleus in fixed shells.
Who created the 5th/current model of the atom?
Chadwick
What did James Chadwick discover?
James Chadwick carried out an experiment which provided evidence for neutral particles in the nucleus (neutrons).
Mnemonic for order of discovery (scientists)
Don’t- dalton. Teach - Thomson. Rude- Rutherford. Boys- Bohr. Chemistry - Chadwick.
