History of the atom Flashcards
What did John Dalton first believe about the structure of the atom in the 19th century?
John Dalton believed that the atom was a tiny, solid, spherical ball. He thought different spheres made up different elements.
What was JJ Thomson’s idea of the atom in 1897?
JJ Thomson believed that the atom was a ball of positive charges with electrons stuck in it.
What did Rutherford discover in 1909?
Ernest Rutherford discovered that most of the atom was empty space and had a positively charged nucleus. (All thanks to his golden foil experiment).
What did Niel Bohr discover?
He discovered that there was a cloud of electrons which surrounded the nucleus, but were contained in shells.
What did James Chadwick discover?
James Chadwick discovered neutrons (neutral particles) in the nucleus.
