REALISM
one of the recurring themes that are linked to either imagination, idealism, inspiration, intuition, or individualism
ROMANTICISM
a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work, which may be stated directly or indirectly.
THEME
Filipinos already have their literature even before colonization.
They use their vernaculars (mother tongue) as a medium in writing different literary pieces in different forms/genres like legends, myths, proverbs, and others.
Their purpose for writing is to preserve their history but mostly were for entertainment and was orally transmitted (oral literature)
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
Influenced the Filipinos in almost everything like beliefs and religion as well as literature from oral to published literary pieces
Writers used Spanish and Tagalog
Introduced genres like novels, poems, awit, korido, zarzuela, and cenaculo
Revolutionary and nationalistic themes emerged
SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD (1565-1896)
Taught Filipinos the English language
Literature was written in native language, Tagalog and English.
Introduced the Western writing styles like Romanticism and Realism
Different literary forms like newspapers, essays, and articles were explored by the writers.
AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD (1910-1941)
Poetry (haiku, tanaga, usual form)
5-7-5 syllable pattern
Literature written in English stopped.
Filipino English writers started to write in Filipino.
JAPANESE COLONIAL PERIOD (1941-1945)
Flexible and dynamic Filipino writers both in English and Filipino
Revived the Philippine literature in Tagalog used different genres (magazines, newspapers, comics, songs, and many more)
CONTEMPORARY PERIOD (1960 to present)
