What is subsistence living?
Subsistence living is when people survive on the tools and food they were able to produce themselves
What were traditional societies based on?
Traditional Societies were small and based on a family, clan, village or age-set
How did people survive?
People survived by hunting, gathering, simple farming and grazing
What division of labour did they work on?
A simple division based on age or gender and everyone in the society worked together
What system did they exist on?
They existed on a system of collective ownership and had few possessions
What diet did they exist on?
They existed on a limited diet of what was available in their environment
As societies developed what did people start to realise?
As societies developed and started to move out of their own area certain groups of people started to specialize in the production of specific goods and foods
What did people start to realise?
That people in other areas had things they wanted or needed
What is bartering?
A system of trade developed whereby personal possessions of value could be exchanged for other goods

9000-6000 bc
